Sustainability in Fashion

Sus·tain·a·bil·i·ty

noun

Avoidance of the depletion of natural resources in order to maintain an ecological balance.

We here at Related Garments live by a motto you may have seen before #WeAreAllRelated. It means a sense of togetherness and community and of course, we can not leave out mother earth. As a company, we are working towards creating and providing more sustainable options for our community.

As many of you may know, the fashion industry has a hefty impact on the strain being put on our planet. Meaning, that if we don’t change things (and fast), we could do permanent damage to this planet that we live on.

Let us put this into perspective and share some facts about the fashion industry and what exactly is going on:

  1. We throw away 85% of textiles into the landfill each year.
  2. The fashion industry is also the second-largest consumer of water worldwide. 3. It takes anywhere from 20 to 200 years for man made fiber to decompose.

Now, this doesn’t mean we all need to stop shopping altogether or have a heavy quilt if you are like us and love fashion it just literally means that we need to be more educated consumers. Let’s talk about how we can make an impact and move towards more sustainable choices.

We all know the coined terms Reuse, Reduce, and Recycle. Even if you learned it way back when in some nursery rhyme to still hold truth today. Here are some tips on how you can take these practices into your closet:

Reuse: Love that new trend you see all over Instagram? Try to see if you have something similar already in your closet before you run out and buy a whole new item.

Reduce: Always donate or sell clothes you would like to part with. A fun new way to do this is called a clothing swap where you can share and trade clothes with friends (we suggest making a whole party out of it!)

Recycle: Create a new-to-you item by DIYing old pieces you may have in your closet into something unique and personal.

We like to lead by example here at Related Garments so we are constantly evolving to be better for you and the planet. We take sustainability seriously and we want you to feel great about receiving your new RLTD digs.

For example, as a company, we have moved towards new packaging and this new packaging is made from recycled materials so we can all feel better about ripping open a new pair of undies.

During these times of single use items and constant waste we knew it was necessary to make reusable masks so we can all wash and resume for whenever a mask is needed. Like we said we want to keep sustainability in mind whenever creating a new product, that is why we have a set of bamboo masks.

Bamboo? Like the plant? That's right! Let us explain for you..

All of our bras and underwear are made of 50% Modal fibers. No, that isn’t a refreshing Mexican beer it is known as a better synthetic fiber over others, such as rayon. Modal is made from natural items like beech trees and you guessed it, bamboo! It uses less water to produce the fiber over cotton which we just learned takes up a lot of our water resources.

We always have you in mind when designing and sourcing our materials for our products and that is another reason why we use models, because it absorbs 50% more water. That leaves you dry and comfortable all day.

When you feel good you look good.
